May CFUG Meeting: Creating a Twitter / Google Maps Mashup with CF and Open Source Tools

Please join us at our next meeting on Wednesday, May 19th at 7:00pm, at One Pixel Off Incorporated's offices at 219 Dufferin Street (Dufferin and Liberty). Enter at the South Entrance, which is the one with the ramp. We will be meeting in suite 306B. Directions will be posted on main entrance door - if you have any difficulty finding the suite just call (416)831-5558

Here is the location on <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=219+Dufferin+St,+Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=33.160552,70.224609&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FavXmQIdZwxE-w&split=0&ll=43.637286,-79.426453&spn=0.007392,0.017145&z=16&iwloc=A" target="_blank">Google Maps</a>

At this month's meeting Bob Silverberg will be giving us a preview of a talk that he'll be presenting at NCDevCon at the end of May. NCDevCon is a free web development conference in North Carolina that has a ColdFusion track, as well as other general web development tracks, including a hands-on "Learn ColdFusion" track. Bob's session is suitable for CF developers of all levels, and is sure to be interesting.

It's called "Creating a Twitter / Google Maps Mashup with CF and Open Source Tools", and is described as:

Do you want to see how easy it is to create something really cool using ColdFusion? In this session I'll demonstrate how I was able to use some freely available tools to generate a map that shows the location of all of my Twitter friends. I'll walk through the code, which makes use of three APIs: Twitter, Google Geocode and Google Maps, all of which were easy to integrate via pre-existing open source projects. You'll leave with an understanding of how to find tools such as these yourself, as well as some ideas of how to integrate them into new or existing projects.

This session is suitable for beginners with a minimal familiarity with ColdFusion, but will be of interest to anyone who is interested in learning about working with open source libraries or who is just interested in seeing some cool stuff that can be accomplished with ColdFusion.

See you there! Clayton and Bob

Please join us at our next meeting on Wednesday, February 24th at 7:00pm, at One Pixel Off Incorporated's offices at 219 Dufferin Street (Dufferin and Liberty). Enter at the South Entrance, which is the one with the ramp. We will be meeting in suite 306B. We will be watching a recording a of a presentation previously given to "The Online Coldfusion Meetup" (<a href="http://www.meetup.com/coldfusionmeetup/" target="_blank">http://www.meetup.com/coldfusionmeetup/</a>) - which is a great resource for Coldfusion developers.

The recording we will be watching is: "FW/1 - The Invisible Framework", with Sean Corfield (<a href="http://corfield.org/" target="_blank">http://corfield.org/</a>)

Here is the description from the CF Meetup Site:

ColdFusion has always been about simplicity and "getting stuff done". I created Framework One (FW/1) in that same spirit: with just one file and some simple conventions, you won't even notice you're using it! If the learning curve, code bloat and XML have put you off other frameworks, find out why developers are saying "FW/1 is perfect" and how you can use it to just focus on your code, be productive and stop worrying about "the framework".

Sean is currently CEO of Railo Technologies US. He has worked in IT for over twenty five years, starting out writing database systems and compilers then moving into mobile telecoms and finally into web development in 1997. Along the way, he worked on the ISO and ANSI C++ Standards committees for eight years and is a staunch advocate of software standards and best practice. Sean has championed and contributed to a number of CFML frameworks and was lead developer on Fusebox for two years.

Sean will be joining us via video conference after the presentation for a Q&A session.

Don't forget that every person who attends the meeting will get 1 entry for our next software raffle, and anyone who brings someone new will get an extra ticket.

As always we'll adjourn to a nearby establishment for food, drinks and talk (both shop- and non-) after the presentations.
